Bus-truck collision injures 17 in Los Angeles

A public transit bus and catering truck collided Wednesday at an intersection near downtown Los Angeles, injuring at least 17 people, authorities said.

A public transit bus and catering truck collided Wednesday morning at an intersection near downtown, injuring at least 17 people, authorities said.

Two of the injured were in serious-to-critical condition, Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said. Eleven in all were transported to hospitals while six were treated at the scene and released.

About 55 firefighters and 11 rescue ambulance responded and the injured were treated on tarps laid out in the intersection of 27th Street and Broadway, south of downtown.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, Myers said.

The bus was traveling westbound when it was struck by a catering truck heading northbound shortly after 9 a.m., said Bill Heard, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Rick Jagger, another MTA spokesman, said witnesses told authorities the truck might have run a red light, but Myers and a police spokesman said they had no indications of that.

It was the latest in a series of recent MTA bus accidents. On Tuesday night, a motorist suffered minor injuries in a collision with an express bus in the San Fernando Valley.
