Boeing close to clinching Singapore deal-WSJ

Boeing Co. might be close to beating French rival Airbus for a deal, worth more than $10 billion, with Singapore Airlines, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Boeing Co. might be close to beating French rival Airbus for a deal, worth more than $10 billion, with Singapore Airlines, a newspaper reported on Friday.

"The indication is (for) an order made up mostly of the 777-200LRs and a significant number of the 787 Dreamliners. A few -- five or six -- of the 747-Advance freighters may also be part of the order," the Wall Street Journal's Web site quoted unnamed sources as saying.

A Singapore Airlines representative said that the airline had not made a decision yet and that an announcement was not imminent.

"The evaluation of the proposals submitted by Airbus and Boeing is ongoing and has not led to a conclusion or leaning in any direction," the airline said in a statement. "Nor has there been any final determination on the numbers of aircraft by category."

Industry sources have said that Singapore Airlines is considering as many as 70 wide-bodied planes for its fleet, with the three Boeing models competing against Airbus's A350, A340 and A380.

Singapore Airlines has 90 aircraft in its fleet, excluding cargo and SilkAir, five of which are Airbus planes. The airline has an order for 19 Boeing 777-300ER planes, with 13 more on option. It also has 10 A380s on order from Airbus, with 15 on option.

Boeing and Airbus are also competing for another deal worth $10 billion with Australia's Qantas, which has said that it might need as many as 100 new planes. (Additional reporting by Mia Shanley in Singapore.)
