Students Take to the Streets Speaking Out Over Immigration Reform

Historically, young people have taken a lead role in public protests and the demand for change. And yesterday was no different, as hundreds of Valley high school students came together and voiced their opinion the pending immigration bill. Student protestors began gathering on the corner of Date Palm and Victoria in Cathedral City. Hundreds of teenagers skipped class and left their high schools in the middle of the day as part of an organized walk out to protest HR4437.

Things got heated quickly after four young protestors were arrested, and parents confronted the police.

Police said they were not trying to stop the protest, but to deal with truant students. Students chanted that illegal immigrants are important contributors to the U.S. economy. As this group of protestors began walking to Cathedral City Hall, on the other side of the Valley, hundreds at Coachella Valley High School stayed on school grounds, but made the same point.

"Half of these students don't have papers, their immigrants. They came for a better life, and now they want to take it away from them. It's just not fair."

Back at Cathedral City Hall, many adults came out to show their support for their young counterparts and to push a bigger agenda to local officials.
