Baby triceratops unearthed in Mont.

A Montana State University student unearthed the skull of a baby Triceratops last week near Jordan.

A Montana State University student unearthed the skull of a baby Triceratops last week near Jordan.

Sonja Scarff was part of a field crew working at the Hell Creek Formation under the direction of Jack Horner, curator of paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies.

Horner said the fossil is only the third of its kind ever to be discovered. He said he believes the Triceratops was less than a year old when it died about 65 million years ago.

"It is a precious size," Horner said. "The orbital horns are only about three or four inches long."

The skull is at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, where it will be extracted from the rock that surrounds it so it can be studied further.

It is scheduled to go on display at the museum's new "Dinosaurs Under the Big Sky" exhibit set to open in June 2007.
