Divers were expected to begin searching Lake Henshaw at about noon on Friday. For now, the lake is closed to the public.

In other developments on Friday, officials with the county medical examiner's office said that the man found dead on Thursday had been identified as Thomas William Meridieth, 62, of Glendora, Calif. He is survived by his wife.

A sheriff's spokeswoman said on Thursday night that the situation began at a little after 5:15 p.m. when the weather began to turn. Four men were fishing on the east side of the lake, a water-recreation area west of Warner Springs. One man had a 12-foot boat with a small motor and offered the others a ride to the west side of the lake. Two of the men accepted the ride.

According to the fisherman who did not accept a ride, the boat was about 50 feet offshore when something went wrong. He spotted a body floating in the water. He told officials he was able to get the man to shore and attempted CPR. The man said he spent the next 30 minutes running around the lake to get help, but rescuers were not able to save the injured man. He was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m.

It's unclear what caused the boat to overturn, but it doesn't appear that the boat was struck by lightning, officials said.

Authorities said that the boat's owner and the other man in the boat are still missing. Conditions on the lake were too treacherous for divers Thursday night, so an underwater search was postponed until Friday.
