The San Diego Sheriff’s Department has redefined the search for two missing boaters in Lake Henshaw as a "recovery mission."
Divers were sent in to search for the victims Friday morning, after their boat overturned during a storm Thursday afternoon. One of the missing men is a pastor at a church in Los Angeles.
The lone survivor, the Rev. Arthur Boone, is also a pastor at the Free Spirit Church of God and Christ in Los Angeles. He told NBC 7/39 in San Diego that he and two others were fishing from the rocks on the lake when the storm arrived.
A lone boat came over to offer them a ride. He said there was only room for two on the boat, so he stayed on the shore.
When the weather changed, he said he turned around and saw the overturned boat and a body floating.
"They left me over there on the rocks," said Boone. "I looked back, and I saw their ice chest floating.
"They didn't have enough room, so they left me. I'm so glad. If they had enough room, I would have been on that boat, too."
One body was recovered Thursday. Officials with the county medical examiner's office identified him as Thomas William Meridieth, 62, of Glendora, Calif. He is survived by his wife.
It is unclear what caused the boat to overturn, but it doesn't appear that the boat was struck by lightning, officials said.
