Hawaiian Airlines sees 1Q passenger yield declines due to increased competition

Hawaiian Airlines said Monday it expects its first-quarter passenger yield to decline from prior-year levels, hurt by heightened competition.

Hawaiian Airlines said Monday it expects its first-quarter passenger yield to decline from prior-year levels, hurt by heightened competition.

The carrier said it expects first-quarter passenger yield, an important industry measure that shows fare trends, to fall 11 percent to 12 percent from the first quarter of 2006. It blamed increased price competition between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii, as well as increased inter-island capacity.

Hawaiian, though, said it also expects its first-quarter unit operating costs, excluding fuel, to decline between 2.5 percent and 3.5 percent from the first quarter of 2006, aided by lower aircraft rental expense.

The company said it expects first-quarter capacity to grow by 13.8 percent and traffic to rise at a slightly lower pace. It expects full-year capacity growth of about 12 percent.

Shares of Hawaiian Holdings Inc. fell 18 cents, or 4.1 percent, to close at $4.24 on the New York Stock Exchange. Its shares have ranged between $2.73 and $6.45 over the past year.
