A suspect has been taken into custody and charged in connection with the shooting death of a 14-year-old Virginia Beach girl Thursday night.
The suspect is a 17 yr old white male who is an acquaintance of the victim.
The suspect's race became an issue because an initial description of the suspect indicated that he was a black male. Investigators determined that the description given by the witnesses on scene were fabricated.
Preliminary information from the investigation has indicated that the suspect was playing around with a stolen fire arm. The gun went off, striking the victim, 14-year-old Patricia Delatorre in the chest.
She died as a result of her injuries.
The 17 yr old suspect has been charged with 2nd degree murder, use of a fire arm in the commission of a felony, and grand larceny of a fire arm.
He was transported to the Virginia Beach Juvenille Correctional Facility where he is being held.

In Virginia Beach a 14-year-old girl was shot in the chest inside a town home on Rica Court. She was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital where she later died.

The victim, Patricia Delatorre, was from the 1800 block of Jagged Rock Drive.
Another teenage girl, Tia Gold found the victim. Gold claims that a young man was playing with a gun when it went off.
"I was upstairs and I heard the shotgun and I heard Trish scream and I went downstairs and she was bleeding," Gold said.
The suspect was described as a male in his late teens, between 6'1" and 6'3" and approximately 180 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt with blue jeans.
