Even as Tropical Storm Karen weakened in the central Atlantic Friday, weather models started to show it could turn westward toward the East Coast of North America over the next five days or so.

But it was still too soon to say where, if at all, the storm would make landfall.

The storm was located about 755 miles east of the Windward Islands of Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines and Grenada at about 5 a.m. ET, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in a report.

Karen, which was packing winds of 45 miles per hour, was moving west by northwest at nearly 10 mph.

The NHC predicted Karen would remain a tropical storm over the next five days even as it continued to weaken over the next 24 hours before regaining some strength after about three days.

In the Atlantic just southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, the NHC said gradual development of an area of low pressure was possible over the next couple of days as it moved slowly westward.
