20,000 Runners Hit Streets In Great Aloha Run

More than 20,000 people took to the streets Monday as part of the 24th annual Hawaiian Telcom Great Aloha Run.

As the runners hurried pass the starting line, Hawaiian Telcom promised there would be no finish to its commitment to the Great Aloha Run, saying it would keep the event in Hawaii for at least three years.

The race has raised more than $7 million for local charities since its inception.

It is one of the few bright spots in recent months for the telecommunications company.

The 8.1-mile race from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium is the second-largest road race in Hawaii after the Honolulu Marathon, and the largest if you count local participants both running and supporting the event.

Almost 4,000 of the 20,000-plus runners were active-duty military members. It takes another 4,000 volunteers to make it all happen.
