EU takes on case of the missing luggage

The EU's top transport official says he will look at airlines’ rules for compensating lost baggage after reports that carriers lost some 40 million bags in 2007.

The EU's top transport official says he will look at airlines’ rules for compensating lost baggage after reports that carriers lost some 40 million bags in 2007.

The European Union’s transport commissioner Antonio Tajani says “strong political intervention” would be necessary if a British consumer group’s report is proven true in claiming airlines are losing increasingly more bags.

Britain’s Air Transport Users Council says in a report released Tuesday that more than 1 million pieces of luggage were irretrievably lost in 2007. It says the annual number of mishandled bags is rising and could be as high as 70 million by 2019.

EU rules allow passengers to claim compensation for being bumped off a flight or having a flight canceled.
