Seven people have died in violent storms in Poland, two in the Czech Republic and one in Germany, authorities said Friday.

Poland's fire officials said the deaths came late Thursday amid heavy winds, which knocked down many trees.

One of the worst-hit areas of the country was around the southwestern city of Wroclaw, where the storm brought down power lines and left some areas without electricity.

In neighboring Czech Republic, authorities said there were two deaths, an elderly woman and a 25-year-old man who drowned and whose body was found south of Prague on Friday.

The storms caused traffic disruptions across the country for several hours and some 150,000 houses were without electricity.

In Germany, a driver was killed Thursday night when he lost control of his car during heavy rains and hit a highway guard rail.

East of Poland, rescue workers walked chest-deep in water to pluck passengers from trolleybuses stranded Friday after heavy rains flooded the heart of the Belarusian capital, Minsk. Cars were also stranded, buildings were flooded and water rippled over a subway station platform in the city center.

No serious injuries were reported.
