Native Peorian Runs For State Comptroller

As the 2010 elections get closer, candidates are kicking their campaigns into full gear. Tonight News 25's Gina Ford tells us about a state Comptroller hopeful who has strong ties to the River City.

There's a new guy on Illinois' political scene and Raja Krishnamoorthi says he's as unique as his name.

"If I get elected, I'd be the first Asian American to hold any state office let alone statewide office", said Krishnamoorthi..

And this state comptroller hopeful is a Peoria native. He graduated from Richwoods valedictorian of his class, went on to Princeton and later Harvard Law. Something he has in common with another famous Illinoisan. "President Obama has been a longtime friend and mentor. He's an inspiration to me".

Krishnamoorthi says just two weeks ago he visited the White House to tell his friend he was running for office.

"I heard this loud booming voice yell out 'Raja!' that's when I knew it was my turn to go into the oval office".

And he says seven years ago, the President, a young state senator at the time, even came to his family's Peoria home for dinner.

Krishnamoorthi says although he lives near Chicago now, Peoria will always be like home.

State Senator, Dave Koehler said, "It's nice to have somebody from Peoria on the statewide ticket. It'd be nice to have a down-stater elected to one of the constitutional offices".

The former deputy Treasurer for Illinois says he hopes to be elected next year, to help end decades of corruption in Springfield.

"I love Illinois too much to sit idly by while these crisis go undealt with",said Krishnamoorthi.
