Failing student hurls acid at professor in Vietnam

A university student angry about flunking his English classes barged into a lecture, threw a bucket of acid at a professor and then stabbed him in the back as he tried to flee, a university official said Tuesday.

A university student angry about flunking his English classes barged into a lecture, threw a bucket of acid at a professor and then stabbed him in the back as he tried to flee, a university official said Tuesday.

Students later overpowered the alleged attacker, Tran Xuan Thanh, and turned him over to police. The teacher, Dang Huu Dung, and several students at the Agriculture and Forestry University in Ho Chi Minh City were injured in the melee and hospitalized.

Dang was lecturing more than 100 students when his former student entered the classroom carrying a 1.3 gallon (5 liter) bucket full of acid and hurled it at the professor. When Dang tried to run away, the student stabbed him in the back, university administrator Tran Dinh Ly said.

Dung was hospitalized with serious burns on one side of his body and other injuries, but they were not life threatening, Ly said. Six students remain hospitalized with serious acid burns and seven others suffered minor injuries.

Thanh, 28, had expected to graduate three years ago but repeatedly failed Dung's required English class, Ly said.

Several acid attacks have been reported in recent years in Vietnam, most of them related to love triangles.

Ho Chi Minh City police, who are holding Thanh, could not be reached for comment.
