The U.S. Justice Department is in Jackson this week, auditing four or five grants received by the city, officials said.
The grants were awarded between 2006 and 2008 while the late Frank Melton was mayor, officials said. The grants were issued to the Jackson Police Department, the planning department and youth services, according to Chris Mims, spokesman for Mayor Harvey Johnson.

"This isn't routine, but not entirely unusual either," Mims said of the audit. "They contacted us and told us to have the documents ready to look at this week. We're cooperating."
Mims also said the mayor's office has no indication of any wrongdoing, misappropriation or mismanagement. "It's just an audit," Mims said.

In 2008, the Department of Justice sent the city of Jackson a letter, demanding a $205,000 grant to JPD be repaid. The city's internal auditor at the time said paperwork was filed incorrectly, which is why the federal government wanted its money back. The city also paid back $284,000 in grant money in 2006.
