Siemens to upgrade NY-NJ train system

German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG said Tuesday it was leading a consortium that will upgrade the PATH rail system connecting New York and New Jersey.

German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG said Tuesday it was leading a consortium that will upgrade the PATH rail system connecting New York and New Jersey.

Siemens, based in Munich, said the consortium had signed a euro224 million ($321 million) agreement with the Port Authority Trans-Hudson to modernize and automate the rail system crossing the Hudson River that will increase passenger capacity from 240,000 to 250,000 passengers per day.

The project will implement a Communication-Based Train Control to the PATH network that will reduce the intervals between trains allowing for more trains to use the same tracks.

Siemens will also provide a train supervision system that will increase efficiency and allow PATH to know exactly where each train is located.

Siemens said installing the technology on the more than 100-year-old PATH system will also increase safety and reliability and reduce maintenance costs on the routes between the World Trade Center and Herald Square in Manhattan and Newark and Hoboken in New Jersey.

Other participants in the consortium include Daidone Electric of Newark, N.J. and Aldridge Electric of Libertyville, Ill.
