A new program aims to make getting through customs fast, quick and easy for pre-approved travelers.
The Global Entry Program went into effect Tuesday morning at the Orlando and Sanford international airports.
Once admitted into the Global Entry program, travelers can bypass the passport control line and proceed to an automated kiosks located in the Customs Border Patrol inspection area to move through the customs inspection process quickly. Passengers swipe their own passports, use a fingerprint scanner and enter the country without delay.
The pilot program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who pay a $100 fee and submit to a background check. A reciprocal agreement with the Netherlands will allow Dutch citizens to participate as well. If approved, membership is valid for five years.
To date, about 1,600 members have enrolled in Global Entry since it started in June 2008 and the Global Entry kiosks have been used more than 51,000 times.
