"Rescue And Runways" Campaign Kicks-Off In Duluth

Not only high heels but puppy paws are making their way down a fashion runway this evening all in part for a good cause.

Northlanders are strutting their stuff on the catwalk right now with some four legged friends to try and find a family for homeless pets. Animal Allies and Maurices teamed up to host this pet themed fashion show as a result of the alarming number of pets surrendered due to a struggling economy.

More than 550 animals have been surrendered by Duluth households so far this year.

That's up more than twice the amount from 2008. But the good news is adoptions at Animal Allies have been through the roof.

Since building their new facility in April, pet adoptions have skyrocketed and are up 127 percent.

A new program called "Meet Your Match" replaces extensive screening and instead focuses on matching adopter and animal personalities.

But one group of furry friends is still having a hard time finding a home. More than 130 adult cats have been euthanized this year. Animal Allies has reduced the cost of adult cats from 90 dollars to 25 dollars through September.

The staff hopes with the reduced rate and help from Maurices to get the word out, more of these furry friends will find a family to curl up with.

The show features models from the community walking the runway with the latest fall looks from Maurices... along with a pet that is available for adoption.
