X-rays negative on Yankees catcher Posada

The New York Yankees could be without slugging catcher Jorge Posada for several games after he took a foul ball off his gloved hand during a 9-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

The New York Yankees could be without slugging catcher Jorge Posada for several games after he took a foul ball off his gloved hand during a 9-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.Posada said he bruised the joint on the ring finger of his catching hand, the same finger he hurt earlier this season. His two middle fingers were bandaged together after the game."The X-rays were negative, so that's a good thing," Posada said. "It's just swollen."Posada is hitting .277 with 17 homers and 63 RBIs in 89 games this season. The Yankees dodged more trouble when third baseman Alex Rodriguez fouled a ball off his left foot in the seventh inning. A-Rod hobbled around for a few minutes and got a visit from a trainer and manager Joe Girardi before remaining in the game for another half inning. He was lifted before the ninth and diagnosed with a bruised left foot."It was 9-2 and I just said, 'I'm taking you out,'" Girardi said. The injury to Posada seemed to distress Girardi much more. He recalled how much his club struggled while Posada was on the disabled list with shoulder ailments much of last season, and when he missed time earlier this season with a strained right hamstring.A solid defensive catcher, Posada couldn't react quickly enough to catch the foul tip in the eighth inning Wednesday night. The ball ricocheted off his catcher's mitt and he immediately began shaking his hand while wandering out to the mound.Girardi came out for a visit and Posada was promptly replaced by Jose Molina."It was the same spot I hurt earlier this year," said Posada, who hit a three-run homer in the second inning. "There's not much I can do, ice it and ice it. ... It's not going to go away, so we'll see."Girardi had already planned to give him the day off Thursday, when the Yankees wrap up the three-game series against the Rangers. He hopes to have him back soon, but wasn't willing to put any timeframe on it."The last time he did it he missed a day," Girardi said. "Is this one going to be more sore than the last one? I can't say. We'll see how it is tomorrow after a couple of treatments, but it is a concern."
