IU Doc Says Sports Can Trigger Unhealthy Eating

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The director of the Indiana University Center for Sports Medicine says fall sports can pose health challenges for teenagers who may try to gain or lose too much weight to improve their athletic success.

Dr. Douglas McKeag says obesity is a major problem for football linemen. He says players often gain weight by overeating, which is unhealthy and can make them prone to injuries or long-term health problems like diabetes.

Meanwhile, cross-country athletes may feel pressure to lose weight. But McKeag says runners are often lean to begin with and may lose muscle, not fat, if they drop below their ideal weight.

McKeag says high school sports can be very beneficial in moderation. He says parents need to help their children make healthy choices.
