Mexico sets refill plan for shrinking acquifers

Mexico's National Water Commission says about one in six of the country's acquifers are overused, with more water extracted than flows back in.

Mexico's National Water Commission says about one in six of the country's acquifers are overused, with more water extracted than flows back in.

The commission says it plans to build wells to use rain water to help artificially refill some of the most critical acquifers in the Mexico City area.

Wells in the capital supply most of the water for the metropolis' 20 million inhabitants. They extract more than twice as much water each year as flows back in to the underground formations.

The commission said Thursday there is over-extraction at 104 of the country's 653 acquifers.

Mexico has been plagued recently by lower-than-normal rainfall, forcing authorities to temporarily reduce water supplies to the capital from nearby dams.
