Hundreds of people have protested outside the Greek Parliament to demand better protection of forests after wildfires blackened large areas on the outskirts of Athens.

Protesters, mostly young and wearing black, held placards and banners reading "Trees burn, villas sprout," and "Profits are burning our trees." Others threw charred pine branches in front of a police cordon.
The fires north of Athens burned 80 square miles (210 square kilometers) of forest and scrub before being extinguished Wednesday.

Environmental groups accuse the government of inefficiency in handling the blazes, which gutted or damaged some 300 buildings.
"We want the government to scrap laws that don't protect our forests," student Christos Kapsalis, 23, said protest.
