Hall of Fame wide receiver John Stallworth returned to the North Side on Sunday as the Pittsburgh Steelers took part of the 21st annual Gatorade/Steelers 5K Race, Fitness Walk and Kids' Kickoff Run.

The race at Heinz Field raises money for the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund. Each year, three graduates from each of the North Side's high schools -- Perry, Oliver and North Catholic -- receive a $12,000 scholarship through the program.

"I think it was a great day. We had more participants in the race this year than we've ever had. It's growing, and it's great to know that these dollars are being raised to help scholarships for kids, to help them better their lives and the lives of their families," said Stallworth, who chaired Sunday's event.

The race, sanctioned by USA Track and Field, comprises a 3.1-mile level course on the North Side highlighted by a finish on the warning track in Heinz Field.

This year's race broke a record with more than 3,000 runners, 2,500 of whom preregistered and were joined by 500 more who showed up to register Sunday.
