Cookbook author Lukins dead at 66 from cancer

Sheila Lukins, a store owner and cookbook author who helped change how America eats, has died. She was 66.

Sheila Lukins, a store owner and cookbook author who helped change how America eats, has died. She was 66.

Colleague Laurie Griffith said Lukins died Sunday at her Manhattan home. She was diagnosed with brain cancer three months ago.

Lukins was an owner of The Silver Palate on New York City's Upper West Side. The store and several Silver Palate cookbooks introduced people to flavors from places such as Greece and Morocco.

Lukins' cookbooks have sold several million copies. She also was the food editor at Parade magazine.

Lukins sold her interest in The Silver Palate store in 1988; it closed in 1993.
