Police: Professor Pocketed Trip Money

A group of metro Detroit students pay for what they said was billed as the trip of a lifetime. But police say it was just an elaborate scam crafted by their own professor.

A group of metro Detroit students paid for what they said was billed as the trip of a lifetime. But police said it was just an elaborate scam crafted by their own professor.

Former Baker College adjunct geography professor Brett Boury organized an 8-day trip for Baker College students to Paris and London for about $1,500.

"I kept saying,'Try contacting him,' and,'This isn't right'," said student Tina Pkak.

Pkak said she is among about 10 students who have complained to police about the trip that never happened.

Students said they paid in full but began to get excuses from Boury as to why the trip was being delayed. The students said Boury told them it wasn’t safe to travel because of the recent Air France plane crash or the H1N1 virus outbreak.

Students said they eventually got a letter from Boury that stated the trip was canceled and that each would get a full refund.

According to police, the letter also claimed Boury had purchased T-shirts for the trip and that the T-shirts would be donated to a charity.

When the students didn’t see any of their money being returned, police got involved.

Clinton Township police said Boury was actually pocketing the money and never made any reservations for students.

"I gave him all the cash at once," said Pkak. "He sounded sincere. He sounded like he had the tickets, but never got tickets."

Boury was in court Monday to face charges stemming from the alleged scam. Police believe as many as 25 people may have given Boury money for the proposed trip.
