MetLife spent $1.61 million in the first quarter to lobby the federal government on consumer protection rights, health care and other issues, according to a recent disclosure report.

That's up from the $1.15 million it spent in the same period a year ago, but slightly lower than the $1.78 million it spent in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The Obama administration has proposed a series of measures to tighten the reins on financial institutions in hopes of preventing a recurrence of the crisis that struck both Wall Street and Washington in the fall of 2008.

MetLife also lobbied on issues including financial regulatory reform, derivatives, consumer protection rights, and federal building codes.

In the January-March period, the company lobbied Congress and the Treasury Department, according to the report filed April 20 with the House clerk's office.
