Apple Hires Ex-NSA Analyst as Security Director

In yet another sign that it's getting serious about user security, Apple has hired former National Security Agency and U.S. Navy expert David Rice to be its director of global security.

Rice has a master’s degree in information warfare and systems engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, and worked as a global network vulnerability analyst for the NSA and as a special duty cryptologic officer for the Navy, according to All Things Digital.

Rice is expected to start at Apple in March. All Things Digital did not report what Rice’s job would entail, but the technology community expects that he is being brought on to bolster security for companies and government agencies that run iPhones and iPads on their networks.

This is not Apple’s first attempt to ramp up its security to stay in line with its innovation. Last year, Apple hired the former security chief at Mozilla as its senior product manager for security, and in 2009 the company hired the former head of security for the One Laptop Per Child project to work on security for Mac OS X, All Things Digital reported.
