Cleveland airport terminal evacuated over screening glitch

Technicians are checking a bag screening machine blamed for an evacuation and delays at Cleveland's main airport.

About 16 flights were delayed Friday morning when a carry-on bag screening machine at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport malfunctioned and passengers had to be cleared out of the terminal and re-screened.

At about 5:30 a.m. local time, workers for the Transportation Security Administration discovered that the bag screener was not providing a "true image" of the bags being examined, according to airport spokeswoman Jackie Mayo.

The TSA called for all passengers to be taken out of the terminal, after which every passenger was re-screened. The process took about 41 minutes, Mayo said.

"It's been quite a few years that they've had to evacuate the entire terminal," Mayo said. She was not sure how many passengers were affected.

It was raining in Cleveland this morning, but Mayo said passengers were able to stand under awnings outside the terminal during the wait.
