Woman arrested in Calif. nursing student's disappearance

The Hayward Police Department announced Wednesday that have made an arrest in the Michelle Le homicide investigation.

The Hayward Police Department announced Wednesday that they have made an arrest in the case of Michelle Le, a nursing student who vanished over three months ago, according to NBC station KNTV.

The arrest happened in Union City, but Hayward police did not list a suspect name.

NBC Bay Area has learned that a person of interest in the case, Giselle Esteban, was arrested in Union City at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday morning. The charge was listed as 187, which is the code for murder, according to the inmate locator tracker for Alameda County.

Esteban is being held on a no bail warrant. She has a court arraignment scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Esteban was a friend of Le's during high school in San Diego.

Esteban in June told a San Francisco television station that she "openly hates Michelle" for stealing her boyfriend in high school, but that she did not kill Le.

An ex-boyfriend had recently accused Esteban of harassing him, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The man filed a restraining order in Alameda County Superior Court on May 24 — three days before Le disappeared — accusing Esteban, the mother of their daughter, of stalking him and engaging in other erratic behavior.

News helicopters over Esteban's apartment complex showed a swarm of police activity, including officers taking boxes of what appeared to be evidence from her home.

Le has been missing since May 27, after she disappeared during a break from her clinical rotation at Kaiser Permanente Hayward. Police later found locked Honda SUV parked with blood inside the next day, but no sign of Le.

Hayward Police said they would have a press conference at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. It was not clear what prompted the arrest Wednesday. Police said nearly a month ago that an arrest in the case was imminent.

Since the disappearance, few details have emerged as to what happened to Michelle. Le’s family has offered up a reward, and have held several search parties.

Le grew up in San Diego and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School before moving to Hayward.

Police ruled the case to be a homicide in June.

A student at Oakland's Samuel Merritt University, Le lived in San Mateo and hoped to become a nurse practitioner like her mother, who died of cancer when Le was a teenager, the Chronicle said. She was about halfway through a yearlong accelerated program.
