Princess Diana’s former lover James Hewitt was arrested near his London home after a midnight fracas with a photographer, newspapers reported on Monday.
Police confirmed they had arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting a photographer in the upmarket South Kensington neighborhood of London.
“He was taken to a central London police station and has been bailed to a date next month pending further inquiries,” a police spokeswoman said.

She said the 24-year-old photographer had been treated by a doctor for head injuries after the scuffle.
Before her death in 1997, Diana acknowledged having an affair with Hewitt, a dashing former cavalry officer, while her marriage to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles was falling apart.

Hewitt has frequently come under fire for publishing accounts of his relationship with the princess, and more recently for offering to sell some of Diana’s letters.
But this year he was a hit with TV audiences, who voted him the winner of a reality show on Channel 5. His biography on the TV station’s Web site says he has “an aversion to paparazzi.”
