Rockets hit U.S. military base in Afghanistan

Attackers fired three rockets Wednesday at the United States' main military base in southern Afghanistan, hitting the grounds but causing no injuries, Afghan government authorities said.

Attackers fired three rockets Wednesday at the United States' main military base in southern Afghanistan, hitting the grounds but causing no injuries, Afghan government authorities said.

Khalid Pashtoon, spokesman for the Kandahar provincial government, blamed the Taliban for the attack, which occurred shortly after midnight Tuesday.

Attackers fired three rockets from a position at Khushab village, west of the Kandahar airport, Pashtoon said. The airport has been the base for U.S. forces since the 2001-2002 U.S.-led Afghanistan offensive.

The rockets hit an empty area of base grounds, causing no property damage or injuries, Pashtoon said.

U.S. and Afghan forces found the launch site for the attack, and defused two more rockets there, Pashtoon said.

Further search found a cache of 22 other rockets at the village, he said.

The base has come under attack from villages and surrounding areas for the two years since U.S. and other allied international forces moved in.

No arrests have been made.

American military officials at the base could not immediately be reached for comment.
