Fireworks store explodes in Mexico, killing 7

An explosion tore through a small fireworks store in western Mexico this week, killing seven people, including a small child.

An explosion tore through a small fireworks store in western Mexico, killing seven people, including a small child, officials said Friday.

The explosion Thursday destroyed the Coheteria Plasencia, one of six fireworks stores in the city of Tonala, said Jorge Sapien, communications director for the Jalisco state civil protection agency. The town is 15 miles southeast of Guadalajara, the state capital.

There was no damage to residences or other businesses, Sapien said. Officials removed fireworks from the other stores as a precaution until determining the cause of the blast, he said.

The explosion killed seven people, including the store’s owner, Jose Rosas Ramirez, 44, and a child, believed to be a boy 2 to 4 years old.

A 16-year-old boy was being treated at a hospital, but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
