Across the world, demonstrations took place to mark International Workers Day, also known as May Day. With high unemployment, a paltry federal minimum wage and insufficient workplace safety regulations, the U.S. worker has much to protest.

On Wednesday, AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka joined the NOW with Alex Wagner panel to discuss the state of the American worker.  “If you look at what is happening around the country,” Trumka said, “150 workers die every day of injuries or of occupational diseases. It’s like we’ve become oblivious to the plight of workers.”

“How long do you think the American public would tolerate 150 citizens getting killed by terrorists each day?” Trumka asked. “Probably not even for one day.”
