Reagan's Casket Departs To California

After lying in state in the Capitol, and being honored in a funeral at the National Cathedral, the body of former President Ronald Reagan is on the way back to California for interment.

The body of former President Ronald Reagan is on its way back to California for interment, after spending part of the week in D.C.

Reagan's body is scheduled to be interred at a sunset ceremony at the Reagan Library in California.

Reagan's body arrived at Andrews Air Force Base on Wednesday afternoon after lying in repose in California. The casket was carried by a caisson for the last few blocks up to the Capitol Rotunda.

About 104,000 people filed past the casket as it was lying in state. Many people waited several hours in long lines in the summer heat to spend a few minutes next to the casket.

On Friday morning, another motorcade carried the casket to Washington National Cathedral in Northwest D.C. There, hundreds of national leaders, foreign dignitaries and other invited guests paid their respects.

A final motorcade carried the casket and the Reagan family back to Andrews Air Force Base. One of the airplanes that normally carries the president is being used to bring Reagan back to California for his final service.

Friday was declared a national day of mourning. To honor the former president, most federal government offices closed for the day, as did the D.C. government and D.C. public schools.
