Terrorist siege: Blasts heard at Kenyan mall

Kenya's military continued to try and rescue hostages inside a shopping mall in Kenya.

Kenya's military continued to try and rescue hostages inside a shopping mall in Kenya.

Three large explosions erupted near the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday morning as a weekend standoff that killed at least 62 people continued.

“We heard several loud explosions; the biggest we’ve heard in the two days we’ve been here,” Ron Allen, NBC News correspondent, said Monday from Africa. “There was a huge cloud of dark smoke rising above this mall.”

Ten gunmen killed and injured shoppers, and kept some hostage, beginning Saturday. Al-Shabaab, a group linked to al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kenya’s military continued to try to free hostages inside the building, where about 1,000 people have been rescued, Allen said. Sporadic gunfire in the neighborhood has kept the situation “intense.”
