Adelphia jury  still without verdict

Jurors in the fraud trial of Adelphia Communications Corp.  founder John Rigas and three other former executives failed on Tuesday to reach a verdict in their sixth day of deliberations.

Jury deliberations entered their second week Tuesday in the fraud and conspiracy trial of four former executives of Adelphia Communications Corp.

The sixth day of deliberations, which ended Tuesday without a verdict, featured several private meetings between the judge and lawyers for both sides — apparently to discuss a jury note that was kept under seal. Lawyers declined comment on the discussions.

The jury is considering 23 criminal counts apiece against Adelphia founder John Rigas, his sons Timothy and Michael Rigas and former lower-level executive Michael Mulcahey.

Federal prosecutors say the four worked together to hide $2.3 billion in debt, a crushing liability that helped drive the company into bankruptcy when it was disclosed in 2002.

Despite lengthy deliberations and requests for dozens of trial exhibits and testimony transcripts, the Adelphia jury’s notes have yet to show any sign of discord or stalled discussions.

Adelphia deliberations were to continue Wednesday.
