Gun search at scene of school massacre

Authorities were searching for for a gun at a Minnesota Indian reservation school that was the scene of a student’s shooting rampage last month, the FBI said Thursday.

Authorities were searching for for a gun at a Minnesota Indian reservation school that was the scene of a student’s shooting rampage last month, the FBI said Thursday.

FBI special agent Paul McCabe said they had “recent information” about a gun at the school, but would not comment when asked how long the gun might have been there.

Red Lake High School was due to reopen next week to students for the first time since 16-year-old Jeff Weise killed five students, a teacher and a security guard March 21, before killing himself. He also murdered his grandfather and his grandfather’s female companion.

“We have uncorroborated intelligence about the possibility of a gun on the premises of Red Lake High School. (We) are currently conducting a thorough search of the school,” McCabe said.

Friday’s planned walk-through of the school, designed to reassure parents, was canceled. Classes had been scheduled to resume Monday in a different area of the school from where the shootings occurred.

A week after the shooting, Weise’s classmate, the son of the tribal leader of the Red Lake Chippewa, was arrested in connection with the attack. A tribal police officer also told residents that up to 20 youngsters on the reservation may have heard about the attack beforehand.
