Plane has 'minor' accident in southern Jordan

A cargo plane had a "minor accident" on a southern border strip near Israel, a spokesman for Royal Jordanian airlines said Tuesday. Israeli TV said the plane overturned while landing.

A Russian-made cargo plane had a "minor accident" on a southern border strip near Israel on Tuesday but it did not crash, a spokesman for Royal Jordanian airlines said Tuesday. Israeli TV said the plane overturned while landing.

"The plane has not crashed, but had a minor accident," said the airline spokesman, Basil Kilani.

Civil Aviation Authority chief Suleiman Obeidat told The Associated Press that the plane was parked on the tarmac at King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba, when it suddenly rolled onto the ground near the tarmac. There was no explanation on what caused the plane to roll.

No casualties
"There was nobody in the vicinity," he said. "Therefore, luckily, there were no casualties."

Israel's Channel 10 TV said a plane overturned upon landing at Jordan's Aqaba airport. Israeli ambulances were mobilizing to cross into Jordan to help in a rescue effort.

It was not immediately known if there were casualties. Aqaba is 350 kms (210 miles) south of the Jordanian capital of Amman. It is at the southern tip of Jordan on the Red Sea, next to the Israeli resort of Eilat.
