New message of terror

A tape made by Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden's right hand man, was played on the Arab sattelite network Al-Jazeera on Thursday.  Experts at the network have have analyzed the footage and determined that the terrorists may be using new methods to further their cause.  MSNBC translator Jacob Keryakes explains the findings.

The Arab satellite network Al-Jazeera broadcasted another taped message from al-Qaida’s second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri today.

Experts at Al-Jazeera determined that the footage shows that not only could al-Qaida be capable of indirectly instigating attacks around the world, but their shift from religious to political speech will prove to be even more dangerous.

MSNBC translator Jacob Keryakes, who monitors the Arab language media, joins MSNBC's Alex Witt to explain the ramifications of the tape.

ALEX WITT, ANCHOR MSNBC LIVE: What’s being said on Al-Jazeera about this tape?

JACOB KERYAKES, MSBNC TRANSLATOR: Al-Jazeera keeps on playing segments of the tape, but not many comments are being said on al-Jazeera.  Only earlier today, when they first played the tape, did they have different analysts.  One of them, an expert on Islamic affairs, said this statement does not say that al-Qaida has taken direct credit for the London attacks. He said that Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri are playing the role of the instigators, they don’t necessarily have to be involved in the attacks themselves, but they might be aspiring sleeper cells in London and other countries that carry out attacks.

WITT: Was there anything about the tone of the message, was there sort of a joyful tone in the message as one might expect from Zawahri and his group?

KERYAKES: Actually, Zawahri was self confident.  The difference between this message and the other messages, according to analysts, is that Ayman al-Zawahri and Osama bin Laden for the past two years have been addressing the American and European public.  That’s why they are using a political message and a political language, more than a religious language that they address the Islamic and Arab public.  They used to use references from the Quran, from the but now they’re using a political language, trying to convince westerners to stop supporting their governments, to put pressure on the governments of the U.S. and the British government to withdraw from Iraq.

WITT: So more political than passionate at this time.
