A school bus overturned on a Bronx expressway Friday, injuring more than 50 adults and children, authorities said.

Scores of emergency workers responded to the crash scene on the Major Deegan Expressway, where the bus was on its side, seat cushions tossed about and smashed glass everywhere.

Most of the children had made it out of the bus by the time rescuers arrived; firefighters went through windows to pull the rest to safety. Some of the children were strapped onto boards for transportation to hospitals.

No critical injuries were reported, and Fire Chief Thomas Dunne described the majority of the injured children as “walking wounded.” Officials at three Bronx hospitals — Montefiore, North Bronx and Jacobi — were expecting victims. In all, 46 children and eight adults were injured.

Officials said a car was involved in the late-morning crash, and police were investigating.

All the children were wearing seat belts, Dunne said. The students were believed to be seventh-graders, although officials declined to provide the name of their school.

The bus driver, Yoland Mays, is an experienced driver, said Neil Winberry, a Transport Workers Union official.
