Mark Lotto, editor in chief of the online magazine Matter, hopes readers don't automatically hit "Google Translate" when they see the site's weekend cover story - in Spanish. The site had published Alma Guillermoprieto's incisive piece on the Pope, Francis's Holy War, and opted to put her Spanish-language version, El Papa Rebelde, on the cover. "This is a story by an acclaimed Mexican journalist who lives in Colombia (and writes in English) about an Argentine, the first Latin American pope, who lives in Rome (and preaches in Italian)," said Lotto, who grew up partly in Madrid. "This story had already crossed so many borders before it was even published, and I wanted it to keep going." Lotto said his site is trying to speak to a reader who grew up in a globalized and connected world. "I've got to believe that in not that many years, we really will be accessing every story in every language, and we will be able to have them gorgeously translated for us, faster and with more fidelity."
