An Amtrak train collided with a tractor-trailer on Monday at a crossing in North Carolina, authorities and witnesses said. sending dozens of people to the hospital.

The locomotive and baggage car of the train derailed, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said. A witness, Lance Martin, the editor of a local newspaper, told NBC News that a third car partially derailed.

Of the 213 passengers on board, Halifax Regional Medical Center said that a total of 43 patients were treated at the hospital, and all but three were discharged by Monday evening. And Nash General Hospital said 16 passengers were treated for minor bumps and bruises and released.

None of the injuries was life-threatening, Amtrak said. Halifax County is in eastern North Carolina, near the Virginia line.

Another witness, Jamie Carter, said that the rig, which was carrying a heavy piece of equipment, had trouble completing a turn and could not move out of the way of the train.

“When the impact occurred, the piece of machinery went well above the tree line and the entire of the train was airborne and landed on its side,” he said.

The train was on the Amtrak Carolinian route, which runs from Charlotte to New York. Amtrak and the National Transportation Safety Board both that they were aware of the accident.
