Canada-Mexico Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Montana

The Boeing 737 landed around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Helena Regional Airport.

A flight from Canada to Mexico carrying 181 passengers and six crew members aboard made an emergency medical landing in western Montana on Sunday after running into extreme turbulence that injured two flight attendants.

The Boeing 737 — en route from Edmonton, Alberta to Puerto Vallarta — landed around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Helena Regional Airport, Sunwing Airlines spokeswoman Janine Chapman said in a statement.

Flight 559's passengers waited in the airplane for upwards of five hours before being instructed to remain in a cordoned-off area in the terminal as the company dispatched another aircraft to finish the journey, The Associated Press reported.

"60 minutes into the flight we had 45 seconds of moderate turbulence followed by 45 seconds of severe turbulence," Chapman said.

Chapman told The Associated Press a medical team cleared a 27-year-old male flight attendant who was cut on the head amid the rough turbulence — but he didn't require stitches. He was in an aisle serving passengers with the turbulence struck.

Responders also checked on a 27-year-old female flight attendant as a precaution. That flight attendant was also serving passengers and fell on the floor, according to Chapman. The medical team prescribed over-the-counter pain medication.
