The man police said fled in the vehicle that caused another car to crash into a Florida day care, killing a 4-year-old girl and injuring more than a dozen others, turned himself in to authorities at Orange County Jail Thursday.

Robert A. Corchado, 28, had been on the lam following the crash.

Cindy Williams, a spokeswoman for Florida Highway Patrol, said the suspect turned himself in about 24 hours after the manhunt began. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

Officials said Corchado rented a black 2014 Mazda CX with license plate CHR-Q41 from a Winter Park Enterprise on Wednesday afternoon.

At a news conference earlier Thursday, Williams said Corchado's photo was broadcast statewide, and points of exit, such as airports and ports, had been alerted.

Williams said the suspect had ties to the Latin Kings gang. His criminal record includes a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a crash that involved property damage.

Department of Corrections records also show Corchado has served prison time for trafficking cocaine.

On Wednesday, police said a Dodge Durango allegedly driven by Corchado crashed into another car, a Toyota Solara, that then struck the KinderCare building in Winter Park.

Officials said the 4-year-old girl, identified by police as Lily Quintus, died at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Thirteen people were hospitalized following the crash.
