Groupon Writes Off U.S. History, Calls Alexander Hamilton 'President'

Groupon copywriters may want to find a discount for a remedial U.S. history course.

In a press release Friday, the deal-of-the-day website announced a President's Day weekend discount of $10 off $40, all in honor of "President Alexander Hamilton — undeniably one of our greatest presidents and most widely recognized for establishing the country's financial system."

Hamilton, who appears on the $10 bill, was the first treasury secretary — but he never got elected to the White House.

The apparent flub set off a wave of snarky and disbelieving tweets — and some Twitter users suggested it may have been a deliberate gag or a publicity stunt.

In a response to one such user, Groupon said via its official Twitter account: "Joke? We'd never joke about saving $10! #AllKindsOfSerious"

Groupon has yet to issue a correction.
