A "paperwork issue" forced a SkyWest Airlines flight bound for Mexico to return to its origin of Salt Lake City, Utah, according to the airline.

SkyWest apologized for the "inconvenience" but did not go into detail on the "paperwork issue" that forced Tuesday night's turnaround. It said the 57 passengers aboard Flight 4864 had been given hotel accommodations and booked on a new flight for Wednesday morning.

Passengers said a pilot announcement was the first sign they would not be continuing on to Puerto Vallarta as planned, according to NBC affiliate KSL.

Casey Boyd, who was traveling with his family for a vacation, told KSL that he couldn't believe it when he learned the plane was turning back with around an hour left to go on the flight.

"We got pretty close," he told KSL. "It sounds pretty unbelievable."

He said the airline has "taken pretty good care" of the passengers and the issue simply means "just one less day of vacation.”
