A fire under a PATH train caused major problems for riders during Monday’s morning rush, with several busy lines suspended and passengers being treated for smoke inhalation.
According to the Port Authority, which runs the PATH, it broke out under an eastbound train in the Newport Station around 6:20 a.m. It wasn’t clear what sparked the fire. The train had to be evacuated.
Suspensions lingered into the morning rush. Both the Hoboken-WTC and Journal Square-33rd Street lines were shut down. WTC-Newark and Hoboken-33rd Street are running. Tickets are being cross-honored.
