A fire in a state-owned coal mine in northeast China killed 24 workers and injured 52 other people Wednesday, government media said. There was no report on the conditions of the injured in the fire at the mine in Shenyang, in Liaoning Province, the official news service Xinhua reported.

The mine was operated by a subsidiary of Liaoning Fuxin Coal Corp., the company said. The mine, which employs more than 4,600 people, shut down operations pending safety inspections, it said.

More than 1,000 people are killed every year in China's dangerous coal mines, according to Chinese government records. Sixteen people were killed when a shaft collapsed in a coal mine last month in Tiechanggou in the northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang. Meanwhile, 22 workers were killed in June in what was described only as a "gas incident" ay coal mine in Chongqing.
