Senate confirms McCarthy for EPA post

The Senate has confirmed Gina McCarthy as the next leader of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The vote was 59-40.

McCarthy, who previously served as the EPA's chief air quality regulator, had been opposed by GOP lawmakers who said that the Obama administration rules she helped write hurt businesses in the energy industry and cost American jobs.  Democrats called her a champion of the environment who can work across the aisle.

More than 10 Republicans voted with most Democrats to break a filibuster on her nomination earlier Thursday.

Hours earlier, the Senate confirmed Tom Perez as the next Secretary of Labor.
