Six people were killed and several others injured when a garbage truck careened down a crowded sidewalk in Glasgow, Scotland, police said Monday. Shoppers and pedestrians fled in horror after the crash, which happened at 2.30 p.m. local time (9.30 a.m. ET).

Police said the truck struck pedestrians outside the Gallery of Modern Art and continued towards George Square where it crashed into the Millennium Hotel. “It continued along the pavement knocking people over like pinballs,” an eyewitness told U.K. news channel Sky News. “It was quite horrific. It went 150 yards before it stopped.”

Police Scotland said they were treating it as a road traffic accident. Local media quoted witnesses saying they thought the driver may have had a heart attack. Police said those injured in the crash, including the driver, have been taken to local hospitals.
